DDP shipping from China is one door-to-door price that already contains freight, export declaration, destination clearance, duty and import VAT — delivered to your address, with you filing nothing. It is the Incoterm our US, UK, EU and Canadian clients ask for most.
But “DDP” hides real choices: air or sea, which UK VAT route, how chargeable weight is calculated, whether your pallet is accepted. Here is how each works in practice.
What Does DDP Shipping from China Actually Mean?
Under Incoterms 2020, DDP (Delivered Duty Paid) puts the whole chain on the seller’s side: factory pickup, export declaration, main freight, import clearance, duty, import VAT and last-mile delivery to your named place. Risk transfers to you at delivery. In one line: DDP is DAP plus duty and taxes.
| Term | Who clears import customs | Who pays duty and import tax | What you need |
|---|---|---|---|
| DDP | Seller / agent | Seller / agent | Nothing — just a delivery address |
| DAP | You | You | Your own EORI or business number, and a broker |
| DDU | — | — | Obsolete: withdrawn in Incoterms 2010, replaced by DAP |
| CIF / FOB / EXW | You | You | Your own forwarder; destination charges and duty are yours |
If you already run an import operation with your own broker, DAP or FOB can be cheaper — but clearance, duty and the broker’s invoice become yours. If you are importing your first container, DDP keeps total cost knowable before you pay. We compare modes and documents in the complete China shipping guide.
Which Lane Fits Your Cargo, and What Does It Cost?
Rates are indicative ranges from our forwarder rate card, in RMB per kg unless stated: the exact number depends on your postcode, product and packing.
| Lane from China | Minimum | Indicative range | Transit | Notes |

How Long Does DDP Shipping from China Take?
| Destination | Air | Sea LCL | Rail + truck |
|---|---|---|---|
| United States | 6–8 working days (P), 7–9 (C), to pickup | DDP LCL, express or standard sailing | Not offered |
| United Kingdom | 5–7 working days after LHR clearance | 40–45 days on the oversize line | 25–30 days after loading |
| European Union | Air from 21 kg | 40–45 days sailing; 45–55 days oversize | 22–25 days |
| Canada | — | 25–30 days Vancouver, 35–40 days Toronto, 30–40 by truck from 14 city zones | — |
Add a UK buffer: oversize cargo runs 9–12 days by air plus 2–3 days delivery after clearance. November to February is the tightest window for space and schedule, so book early.
What Are the Three UK VAT Options — and Which Should You Choose?
UK buyers ask about this most: it changes both the price and who reclaims the VAT. All three routes are genuinely DDP:
- Own VAT (your own number). Cleared on your UK VAT number, so import VAT is declared by you and normally recovered on your quarterly return. RMB200 clearance per shipment, no product surcharge. Best for VAT-registered importers.
- VAT deferred (postponed VAT accounting). Import VAT is deferred to your VAT return instead of paid in cash at the border. Also RMB200 clearance per shipment. Best for cash flow at import.
- Duty paid (tax and VAT included). We carry duty and VAT, so goods arrive fully cleared, with a product-based surcharge on top of freight. Best if you have no UK VAT number yet, or simply want one landed number.
Get the route stated in writing on the quote — a “DDP” price is only as good as which of the three it is. Buyers clearing under DAP need their own VAT number and EORI; compare against the lanes above before assuming it is cheaper.
How Is Chargeable Weight Calculated — and Why Does 6,000 Matter?
Air and standard lines bill the greater of actual and volumetric weight, where volumetric weight is length × width × height in centimetres ÷ 6,000. European oversize cargo uses a 7,000 divisor and a 30 kg minimum; Canada sea freight converts 1 CBM to 400 kg.
Illustration: a 60 × 40 × 40 cm carton is 96,000 cm³ ÷ 6,000 = 16 kg chargeable, even if it weighs 9 kg; repacked into 50 × 40 × 30 cm it drops to 10 kg.
Two floors apply on top. US air starts at 12 kg and every single piece bills at a minimum of 12 kg — a 4 kg carton still pays for 12. To the UK the shipment minimum is 5 kg with a 12 kg minimum per box; to Europe, 21 kg per shipment and 12 kg per piece. For US air, once actual weight reaches 100 kg, 50% of the volumetric weight can be split off the billing.
What Are the Rules for Cartons, Pallets and Wooden Crates?
Packaging rules decide whether cargo is accepted, not just what it costs.
- Small-parcel lines take cartons only — no wooden frames, crates or pallets.
- Oversize lines take crates, frames, pallets and aviation boxes. Wood packaging needs a hinged lid and 10 cm forklift feet.
- UK pallets: max 100 × 120 × 200 cm and 800 kg, with a forklift at the receiving site. Delivery is RMB630–1,200 per pallet, plus a RMB300 booking fee on air oversize shipments. Waiting past 15 minutes bills GBP30 per hour, a timed slot GBP30 per shipment, and Northern Ireland clearance +RMB250.
- European oversize: pallets up to 2.4 × 2.0 × 2.2 m and 1,000 kg, with 7 days free storage after clearance, then RMB4–6 per CBM per day.
- FBA: at least 2 labels per box; over 22.5 kg needs a Team Lift label, over 15 kg a Heavy Package label. Irregular packaging adds RMB140–200 per piece.
If goods are bulky rather than heavy, the divisor drives the quote, not the scale weight — which is why we ask for carton dimensions before pricing. Our export packaging guide covers the rest.
What Can — and Cannot — Ship on a DDP Line from China?
Accepted: general cargo, batteries and magnetic goods (C-line air only), FBA consignments, and oversize, palletised or crated cargo. Canada sea freight also takes furniture, appliances, machinery and aluminium profiles, plus cosmetics, skincare, food (no meat, eggs or dairy) and liquids on the MG service, which needs an ingredient list.
Not accepted: counterfeits, weapons or replicas, loose batteries and power banks, medicines, flammable, explosive or corrosive substances, powders and unidentified liquids, antiques, coins and stamps, live animals, and food on standard air cargo lines.
A second filter applies in the United States, where 13 product groups sit on the anti-dumping watch list — from steel fasteners and melamine through wooden bedroom furniture, solar cells, bearings, coated paper, polyester fibre, tyres and televisions to honey and aluminium profiles. They are not banned, but they are scrutinised and duty exposure differs, so tell us the product before you book.
What Happens If Cargo Is Late, Lost or Damaged?
Claims run on three clocks: 20 days for cargo not collected at destination, 60 days from dispatch for in-transit problems, and 7 days after signed delivery for damage.
Compensation is weight-based: RMB40/kg by air and RMB20/kg by sea, and in both cases freight is not refunded. After handover to final-mile delivery the cap is USD100 per shipment. Delay claims are excluded from mid-November through February, and fragile breakage or partial loss on fragile items is not covered. This does not replace cargo insurance on high-value consignments.
Should You Choose DDP — and Can You Lower the Declared Value?
DDP versus DAP is a resource question, not a price question. With your own VAT number and a broker, DAP gives line-item visibility; without one, DDP wins on total cost. For the EU, low-value B2C parcels up to €150 travel under IOSS instead. Duty and VAT rates depend on the HS code and destination country, so they are confirmed shipment by shipment.
We will not under-declare. Understating value is illegal in the destination country: HMRC, US Customs and Border Protection and the CBSA can reassess duty and fine the importer, wiping out anything the under-declaration saved. Every DDP quote we issue is built on real values — which is why our quotes do not change after arrival.
How Do You Get an Exact DDP Quote?
Send five things: the product and its HS description, the number and dimensions of cartons or pallets with weights, your delivery postcode, your deadline, and whether you have a VAT, EORI or business number. You get two or three lane options, tax and duty in writing, and the clearance fee itemised rather than folded into a vague per-kilo number.
The service itself covers supplier sourcing, inspection and factory audits so the goods are right before they ship. Reach us on WhatsApp at +86 139 2270 2227 (09:00–19:00 GMT+8, Monday to Saturday) or send your details through the contact form — quotes typically come back within 12 hours.
FAQ
What does DDP shipping from China mean? Incoterms 2020 DDP means the seller or agent pays freight, export declaration, destination clearance, duty and import VAT, then delivers to your named address. You do no customs work and risk passes on delivery. It is DAP plus duty and taxes.
How long does DDP shipping from China take? Air to the US is 6–9 working days to pickup, and 5–7 working days to the UK once LHR clearance is done. Sea LCL into Europe is 40–45 days sailing. Rail runs 22–25 days to the EU and 25–30 days to the UK after loading, and Canada LCL takes 25–40 days to the door.
Do I need a VAT or EORI number for DDP shipping from China? Not on the duty-paid route. For own VAT or VAT deferral you need a valid UK VAT number and EORI. For DAP you need your own EORI, IOSS or Canadian business number and your own broker.
How is chargeable weight calculated on a DDP shipment? Length × width × height in cm ÷ 6,000 for air and standard lines, ÷ 7,000 for European oversize. The higher of actual or volumetric weight bills, every piece has a 12 kg minimum, and Canada sea freight bills 1 CBM as 400 kg.
Can I ship batteries, magnets or oversize crates on a DDP line from China? Batteries and magnets go on the C-line air service; the P line does not carry batteries. Crates and pallets go on the oversize lines with a hinged lid and 10 cm forklift feet; UK pallets cap at 100 × 120 × 200 cm and 800 kg.
What are the claim windows for a DDP shipment? 20 days for uncollected cargo, 60 days from dispatch while in transit, 7 days after delivery for damage. Air pays RMB40/kg and sea RMB20/kg without refunding freight, capped at USD100 per shipment after the last-mile handover; delay claims are excluded from mid-November to February.
