Most overseas buyers give Xiamen exactly one slot on their China sourcing itinerary: the city where they spend a night on the way from Guangzhou to Quanzhou.
That is a scheduling mistake.
Xiamen is the one city in Fujian’s manufacturing base where high-certification-threshold categories cluster: China’s first national LED base is here, the only pilot city for the national optoelectronic display industry cluster is here, several individual plumbing fixture categories rank first nationwide in export volume, and fitness equipment exports rank first in Asia. At the same time, it is China’s largest stone import and export port, with roughly 60% of the country’s stone moving in and out through Xiamen.
The sourcing logic for these categories is nothing like “going to Yiwu for small commodities”: no matter how good the price you negotiate, if certification fails or batch consistency collapses, the goods are worthless.

Start With Six Numbers: Is Xiamen Worth the Trip?

Exports are rising while imports are contracting (+8.6% vs −3.5%), and private enterprise exports are up 13.0% — for overseas buyers this means two things: capacity is concentrated on the export side, and factories are willing to take overseas orders; at the same time, there is still room to negotiate.
The one number to watch is the sixth. Cross-border e-commerce imports and exports fell 42.2%, which tells you that the small-parcel direct mail model is retreating after changes to tariff and de minimis policies, and orders are shifting from “cross-border parcels” back to “B2B general trade plus full-container exports.” That is precisely where a sourcing agent earns its keep: full containers mean volume, inspection, certification and consistency — none of which you can skip.
The Four Industrial Belts: Xiamen Is Organized by Park, Not by Market
Unlike Guangzhou or Yiwu, where you can spend three days walking one big market, Xiamen is spread across parks and industrial zones. Understanding this table can save you half of an unproductive trip:

Three key differences:
- Optoelectronic display is Xiamen’s “national-level identity.” In April 2004, the Ministry of Science and Technology designated Xiamen as a “National Semiconductor Lighting Engineering Industrialization Base” — Xiamen was China’s first national LED base. Xiamen is also the only pilot city for the national optoelectronic display industry cluster, has gathered over 2,100 upstream and downstream display supply chain companies, and hosts the world’s largest touch module R&D and production base. Leaders such as Tianma, TPK, AUO and TPV all have operations in Xiamen. The practical conclusion: for “intermediate” categories like backlights, touch panels and LED modules, Xiamen makes it easier than Shenzhen to find factories that have both a certification system and mass-production capability.
- Plumbing fixtures are a “high-end finished goods plus certification” strength. Xiamen’s plumbing fixture industry has a total output value of about RMB 33 billion, with products exported to over 180 countries and regions. High-end faucets, toilet seat rings and covers, tank fittings and hoses rank first nationwide in export volume in their individual categories (per the Fujian Provincial Government website and Fujian Daily). ODM companies such as Runner, Solex, Luda and R&T are all based in Xiamen. Note: Xiamen handles the finished goods and certification end, while Quanzhou Nan’an handles the castings and engineering valve end. The two are upstream and downstream of each other — don’t mix them up when requesting quotes.
- Fitness equipment is Asia’s number one export base. Xiamen’s fitness equipment industry has annual output value of about RMB 52.8 billion (per the Xiamen Investment Promotion Bureau website). According to Xiamen Customs, from January to November 2025 Fujian’s exports of sporting goods and equipment reached RMB 11.19 billion, up 11.65% year on year, with fitness and rehabilitation equipment and treadmills as the main categories.
Xiamen Is Less a “Cheap City” Than a “Certification City”
What these four categories have in common: the barrier to entering North America is not price, it’s certification. Half of a sourcing agent’s value lies in keeping certification and consistency under control.

In one sentence: in Xiamen, certification isn’t passed just because “the factory says it passed” — the documents, test reports and production line consistency have to line up. Four Categories, Four Inspection Blocks
A generic checklist will always miss something. These are the inspection blocks we actually use when scheduling orders:

Xiamen Port and Multi-Factory Container Consolidation: Three Practical Points
In 2025 Xiamen Port handled 12.5077 million TEU of containers and 211 million tonnes of cargo, with 192 production berths citywide (including Zhangzhou), 82 of them 10,000 DWT class (Xiamen Bureau of Statistics communiqué). The hardware is fine — the issue is the nature of the cargo:
- Plumbing fixtures and fitness equipment are a “heavy cargo plus volume cargo” combination. Container type (20GP / 40HQ) and internal loading plan must be decided at the quotation stage, otherwise freight in the final step will eat your margin.
- Stone requires inland trucking and in-container bracing to be calculated in advance, and someone must supervise loading. Xiamen is China’s largest stone import and export port (about 60% of the country’s stone moves through Xiamen, per industry and trade show sources). Xiamen International Stone Fair covers 191,000 sqm with 2,000 exhibitors from over 40 countries and regions — the scale of the stone business is here, and so is the risk at the container loading step.
- Consolidating multiple factories into one container saves money, but someone has to receive the goods. The four industrial belts are spread across different districts; treadmills and showerheads don’t come from the same factory. The agent needs local warehousing and cross-factory receiving capability to bring several factories’ goods into one container. How Xiamen Sourcing Agent Fees Are Calculated
Bottom line first: the commission model is still the mainstream. Xiamen is no more expensive than Guangzhou, but certification and heavy cargo come with extra cost items.

Three pitfalls to avoid: ask for a written fee schedule (whether commission includes inspection, travel and taxes — if it isn’t in writing, it doesn’t count); be wary of commissions below 3% or “zero commission” (it will always be recovered through factory unit prices, tooling fees or logistics). The Three Most Common Pitfalls
- Treating a “sample report” as “mass production capability.” LED color temperature drift, plumbing plating thickness and treadmill welding are all problems that only surface in mass production. A beautiful sample doesn’t mean a stable batch.
- Certification registered under the factory’s name. You paid for the testing, but the certificate is in the factory’s hands — switch factories and it’s worth zero, plus you risk “same model, different certificate” compliance problems. Before listing, confirm who holds the certificate and the model list.
- Calculating freight for heavy cargo as if it were light cargo. Plumbing fixtures and fitness equipment are priced by volumetric weight, stone by weight and container type. If you don’t work this out at the quotation stage, the final step is a hard loss.

Q1: How much do Xiamen sourcing agents charge? The mainstream model is a 5%–8% commission on order value, usually covering factory sourcing, price comparison, order follow-up, and coordinating inspection and shipping. Factory audits, inspections, samples and warehousing are billed separately at actual cost. Xiamen has two easily overlooked items: third-party certification testing fees (quoted by labs, should be settled at cost) and heavy cargo special handling (stone loading supervision, in-container bracing). Get a written fee schedule before you start, and be wary of commissions below 3%.
Q2: What’s the difference between plumbing fixtures in Xiamen and in Nan’an, Quanzhou? They make different things. Nan’an (Luncang, Yingdu) leans toward castings, hardware parts and engineering valves — the scale and cost end. Xiamen leans toward high-end finished goods and certification — showerheads, care faucets, toilet seat rings and covers, tank fittings, hoses — with several individual categories ranking first nationwide in export volume and a more mature ODM and certification system. The right approach: negotiate finished goods and certification lines in Xiamen, negotiate hardware parts and engineering items in Nan’an, and ship them in one consolidated container.
Q3: For LED lighting entering the US, who pays for certification and how long does it take? Testing fees are usually borne by the factory first and then built into the unit price (alternatively, the buyer can pay directly and hold the certificate under their own name — the latter is safer). For luminaires, UL/ETL + FCC is common; for rebate channels you also need ENERGY STAR or DLC. The timeline depends on whether the design changes: existing models using the factory’s existing certification are fastest; changing the driver, power supply or structure means retesting. So when requesting quotes, treat the “certified model list” as part of the lead time.
Q4: What are the MOQs and inspection priorities for fitness equipment and treadmills? Based on our experience: small and medium equipment commonly starts at a few dozen to a few hundred units; treadmills, with higher motor and packaging costs, commonly start at within one container for a first order; custom parameters and steel frame structures push MOQs up noticeably. Inspection priorities are not appearance but static load/fatigue testing of welds and load-bearing structures, plus full-carton drop tests — problems here are safety and recall level. Q5: We already have an agent in Guangzhou or Shenzhen. Can they handle Xiamen on the side? Yes, but confirm whether they have on-the-ground staff in Fujian. Xiamen’s four industrial belts are spread across Torch Hi-Tech Zone, Jimei, Haicang, Tong’an and Xiang’an, and stone requires covering the Xiamen port and Nan’an Shuitou — managing factories remotely basically doesn’t work.
