How the chargeable weight is built

Volumetric weight = length × width × height in cm ÷ 6,000, and the chargeable weight is the greater of actual and volumetric. Minimum 5 kg per shipment and 12 kg per box on the air lanes, 21 kg per shipment on the rail-truck lane, and a 50% bubble split on bulky light cargo. Oversized shipments add a per-shipment booking fee of RMB 300 by air, and timed delivery is GBP 30 per shipment. Run your postcode and weight through the free UK calculator →

The UK is priced in 22 postcode zones

Pallet delivery is priced by postcode area, not by county — which is why two neighbouring towns can sit in different zones and different prices. The card runs 22 zones; here are the ones buyers ask about most.

Own VAT or deferred → about RMB 7,200–10,000 + RMB 200 clearance fee
  • 200 kg general cargo, rail-truck, London (E postcode)
About RMB 2,600–3,800 at the 101–500 kg tier + RMB 200 clearance fee
  • 6 pallets of furniture, sea oversized, Birmingham (B)
    Head-haul RMB 7.5/kg on chargeable weight + 6 × RMB 630 pallet delivery
  • 40 kg battery product, air economy (C), Leeds (LS)

Own VAT, VAT deferred, or duty paid — what actually changes

UK import VAT is the line that decides most quotes, and the card prices all three ways of handling it. If you are VAT-registered, the own-VAT and deferred options cost you RMB 200 per shipment in clearance fees and no product surcharge — you account for the VAT on your return. If you are not VAT-registered, or you simply do not want a customs process, take duty paid and the surcharge covers it.

We never quote one and ship the other. Tell us which basis you want at quote stage and the number you get is the number you pay.

  1. 1Own VAT — you provide a valid UK VAT number, the entry is cleared in your name, we charge RMB 200 per shipment. Import VAT is reclaimed or offset through your own return.
  2. 2VAT deferred (postponed VAT accounting) — same rate as own VAT on both air lanes, same RMB 200 clearance fee; the import VAT is declared on your return instead of being paid at the border, so no cash outlay before you sell.
  3. 3Duty & VAT paid — we clear and pay; a product-category surcharge applies on top of the lane rate. Nothing arrives with a customs invoice against your company.
  4. 4Northern Ireland adds a RMB 250 clearance surcharge; the delivery itself is zone 22 at RMB 1,200 per pallet.

Clearance in the UK: your VAT number or ours

Four things decide your final number on a UK shipment: the lane, the chargeable weight, the postcode zone and the import-VAT basis. Here is how each one is applied.

Parcel lanes take cartons only

Air and rail-truck services accept cartons — no wooden crates, frames or pallets. Anything palletised or oversized moves to the oversized line, where crates, frames and pallets are accepted. Check your crate or pallet against the limits →

Pallet and crate limits

Maximum pallet 100 × 120 × 200 cm and 800 kg, counted in 120 × 80 cm positions. Wooden packing needs hinged lids and 10 cm forklift feet, and the receiving address needs a forklift.

Waiting and timed delivery

Delivery waiting time is GBP 30 per hour after the first 15 minutes, and a timed or booked delivery slot is GBP 30 per shipment. Give the consignee's phone and email and we book the slot.

Declared value

HMRC assesses duty and penalties on the declared value, so we do not under-declare. Invoices must carry a detailed description, material, use, HS code and value.

Batteries and magnets

Built-in batteries and magnetic goods travel on air economy (C) with a declaration, and a magnetic inspection report is required for magnetic cargo. Pure batteries and power banks are refused on every lane.

What is not included

Customs inspection plus any detention, demurrage or storage it causes, devanning and handling, second delivery attempts, remote-area surcharges and palletising. Quotes are valid 7 days because space and freight follow the carrier's latest prices.

Oversized, palletised and FBA-adjacent cargo

  • Sea and air oversized services with wooden crates, frames and pallets accepted
  • Pallet delivery priced per zone, so a Birmingham pallet and a London pallet are quoted honestly apart
  • FBA prep check before dispatch: 2+ labels per carton, Team Lift above 22.5 kg, Heavy Package above 15 kg
  • Delivery into your own warehouse, a 3PL or a nominated customer address

EXW, FOB and consolidation

  • EXW collection from each factory, consolidated at our Guangzhou warehouse
  • FOB via Shenzhen, Guangzhou/Nansha, Ningbo, Shanghai or Yiwu with export clearance in our name
  • Goods received, checked against the packing list, photographed and repacked
  • One waybill, one cut-off, one document set instead of five

Working as a freight partner? We are the China-side desk: you keep the customer and the last mile, we find and audit the factories, negotiate, inspect, consolidate and hand over on EXW, FOB or DAP. See our shipping and consolidation service →

Shipping to the UK — the questions buyers actually ask

Per-kilo rates, import VAT bases, postcode zones, oversized cargo, Northern Ireland and consolidation.

How much does it cost to ship from China to the UK?

On our contracted forwarder's September 2026 rate card, all UK lanes are door-to-door in RMB per kilo of chargeable weight. Air priority (P): RMB 36–50/kg on own VAT or deferred, RMB 38–53/kg duty and VAT paid. Air economy (C): 41–59/kg own VAT or deferred, 44–62/kg duty paid. Rail-truck: RMB 13–19/kg. Oversized and palletised cargo: RMB 41/kg by air or 7.5/kg by sea head-haul plus a pallet delivery fee of RMB 630–1,200 per pallet depending on the postcode zone.

What is the difference between own VAT, deferred and duty-paid for a UK import?

They are three ways to handle UK import VAT, and the card prices all three. Own VAT: you clear with your own UK VAT number and account for the import VAT on your return; we charge a RMB 200 per shipment clearance fee and no product surcharge. VAT deferred: the import VAT goes onto your VAT return through postponed VAT accounting instead of being paid at the border — same RMB 200 clearance fee. Duty paid: we pay the duty and the VAT ourselves and a product-category surcharge applies, so the price you see is the price to your door.

How long does shipping from China to the UK take?

Air: 5–7 working days to pickup after we receive the goods, cleared at Heathrow. Rail-truck: 25–30 days to pickup, counted from two days after the container is loaded. Oversized air cargo: 9–12 days plus 2–3 days delivery after clearance. Oversized sea cargo: 40–45 days. Add 3–7 days of consolidation and export paperwork in China before the cut-off.

Why is my UK price different from my neighbour's — we are in the same county?

Because UK delivery is priced in 22 postcode zones, and the zone is set by the postcode area, not by county or city. Outbound London (E, EC, WC, W1–W2, SW1/3–4/7–11, SE1/5/11/15–17) is zone 17 and the most expensive; Manchester (M) is zone 2; Birmingham (B) is zone 1; Northern Ireland (BT) is zone 22 at RMB 1,200 per pallet. A Leeds (LS) parcel and a Bradford (BD) parcel next door sit in different zones. Give us the postcode and we look it up.

How is the chargeable weight calculated on UK lanes?

Chargeable weight is the greater of actual and volumetric weight, with volumetric weight = length × width × height in centimetres ÷ 6,000. The minimum is 5 kg per shipment and 12 kg per box, and a 50% bubble split applies to bulky light cargo. On palletised oversized services the shipment is billed as a head-haul rate per kilo plus a delivery fee per 120 × 80 cm pallet position; the maximum pallet is 100 × 120 × 200 cm and 800 kg, and the receiving address needs a forklift.

Can you ship oversize or palletised goods to the UK?

Yes — that is the oversized line, and it is the honest answer for furniture, machinery and anything that will not fit a parcel lane. Air oversized: RMB 41/kg head-haul, 9–12 days, plus 2–3 days delivery after clearance, with a RMB 300 per shipment booking fee. Sea oversized: RMB 7.5/kg head-haul, 40–45 days. Pallet delivery is RMB 630–1,200 per pallet by postcode zone. Parcel lanes take cartons only — no crates, frames or pallets.

Do you handle Northern Ireland and the Scottish Highlands?

Yes, at higher delivery rates, because the forwarder prices them as remote zones: Northern Ireland (BT) is zone 22 at RMB 1,200 per pallet with a RMB 250 clearance surcharge, the Aberdeen and Inverness areas (AB 10–56, IV, KW) are zone 20 at RMB 1,100, and the outer Scottish islands (DG 3–9, FK 20–21, G83–84, PO 30–41, TD 11–15) are zone 19 at RMB 1,040. We tell you the zone before you book, not after.

Can you consolidate goods from several Chinese suppliers into one UK shipment?

Yes, and on UK lanes it changes the maths more than on most: duty and VAT are assessed per import entry, and every extra supplier usually means an extra entry. We collect from each factory, check quantities against your PO, consolidate at our Guangzhou warehouse, prepare the UK customs documents, apply the FBA label or commercial delivery rules and hand over one waybill, one cut-off and one document set. FBA rules we check here: two or more labels per carton, Team Lift above 22.5 kg, Heavy Package above 15 kg.
